The Cheetah was first introduced to the public at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show. Built on contract for Mobility Technology International of the United States, the Cheetah was developed with hopes of selling it to the United State Military.
The car had a Chrysler V8 engine and 3-speed A727 automatic trasmission feeding power to all four wheels through torque biasing interaxle differentials.
Tilt-up sections of the body made servicing a breeze. The body could also be easily replaced with an armored one for use by the military.
The Cheetah underwent testing by the U.S. Military in California. Unfortunately it was destroyed in a crash during demostrations in the desert. The remains were left in California and eventually purchased by a company hoping to further develope the vehicle. A second version was built by this company before the idea was scrapped and both vehicles were destroyed (cut up into tiny little pieces and sold off for scrap). Neither vehicle exists.
Mobility Technology later abandoned the project after running into patent infringement problems with FMC Corporation who eventually built the now famous HUMMV.
Lamborghini was not content to let the 4x4 project fade into non-existance and started development on the LM001.
Note: If anyone knows of the whereabouts of the Cheetah's remains or has photos of the Cheetah while in California, please contact our offices.
