1971 LAMBORGHINI Espada S2
Chassis #8206
Engine #40482
This Series IIa Espada is a RHD conversion presently owned by B. Simpson of Australia. This photo was taken very early (lousy light) on the morning of the Australian Italian Car Clubs National Concorso Italiano in Canberra in 1998.
This car appears to have been converted from left hand drive to current right hand drive. Unlike every other Series II seen or heard of in Australia, it has the optional ZF power steering, but this could have been fitted with the RHD conversion. Unfortunately no optional limited slip diff.
Car war purchased in 1997 from Australian tennis player John Alexander, who bought the car around 1990 as a restoration project from Sydney's Henry Nehrybecki (former Lambo distributor in Australia). Henry undertook a total (bare metal) restoration for Alexander over several years. Alexander wasn't happy with the engine rebuild (but was happy with everything else), as it didn't rev like he knew it should (eg should be like the Daytona he owned when living and competing in the US). New parts had not been used (thus a motoring association observed pull-down followed by a legal stoush). Alexander had the engine totally rebuilt again by another supplier (Lucky's in Sydney), this time with new parts.
So Alexander never got to use the car for its original intent (a honeymoon) because the car wasn't ready. And not long after he sold it, he was separated. But he did use the car for other activities!
He put the car on consignment with a Sydney dealer (The Toy Shop, which occupied the North Sydney site of former Lambo distributor, Paul Halstead (the Toy Store).
"I'd only just decided to get an Espada Series I or II (I'd expected it to take around 2+ years to find a good one), and this was the first I'd looked at. It was overpriced (compared to sale prices of other Espadas). While I madly looked at other Espadas, I watched the price drop (maybe people were scared off by the engine rebuild bill) over a few months. Suddenly the car
wasn't in the showroom. Next week I see one listed privately in the newspaper classifieds, much cheaper again. Yes, its the same one. Early the same morning, I'm off to the Alexander's. Engine runs badly but car is sound. Deal done subject to further mech checks. Car sold!
"Engine runs rough so it's straight to the workshop to pull the heads off and check everything. One bank was masterfully done. My friends say it's as though the other bank (cam timing etc all wrong) must have been done by the new apprentice. After building some fine adjustment into the carby linkages and my friends' tuning, its perfect. Such soul!
"So I'm really happy and forever grateful to John Alexander for arranging such a wonderful restoration (or two)!" - B. Simpson
