1966 Miura P400, The First Miura
Chassis #0509
Engine #00874
Prod. #1
The first prototype was finished in an orange-red with brown interior and trim and a plexiglass rear windshield over the engine compartment. This was later changed in developement do to problems with overheating. Holes were cut in the plexi to improve cooling but this had little effect. The louvers that replaced the plexiglass allowed for better airflow through the engine compartment reducing operating temperatures significantly.
This was the car that appeared at the 1966 Geneva show and two months later and the Monaco Grand Prix where it was honoured by serving as the cerimonial-circuit opener for the race. #0509 was sadly destroyed in a motor accident. According to the story it was driven up to Bertone one day and on the way back, while stopped at a light, a truck drove over it from behind. The driver only had time to bail out and watch.
