THE COUNTACH IN FORMULA ONE

A cache of historic photographs taken by an award-winning F1 photographer of the period has been uncovered by the lamborghiniregistry.com, depicting the Countach's role in Formula One racing at the time. Purchased by Joe Sackey, the images depict the Countach's role as the official pace car for Formula One's crown jewel, the Monte Carlo Grand Prix, in the years 1980/1/2. The cars used were the Countach LP400S Series One, and Series Two. Participation in this event undoubtedly served to cement the Countach legend as thousands of serious motorsports fans got to see them in action at speed, driven as they should be, by invited Formula One stars of yesteryear. The best image depicts "The Belgian Master", ex-Ferrari F1 pilot and Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx, in the Countach S Series One emerging from the tunnel at speed. Moments later his facial expression as captured on film reveals his emotions as he exits the car on pit lane. The track workers in the tunnel were smiling too... Countach!

The Countach was the official FIA-sanctioned pace car for the Monte Carlo Grand Prix. Someone pretty high up at Automobili Lamborghini SpA had to have pulled strings with both the Automobile Club de Monaco and the FIA in order to have Lamborghini accepted as the pace car for the years 1980/81/82/83. The likely patron of this clever promotional move was factory owner Patrick Mimran himself.

The Monte Carlo pace car exposure started what lead to the Countach earning the unofficial title of "The Most Photographed Car In The World". One thing is certain about the photographs provided in this story: they have never been published - anywhere! A lamborghiniregistry.com exclusive.
