During the late 1980's, Lamborghini felt it was time to replace the dated styling and mechanicals of the Urraco/Jalpa model and develope a more "affordable" high-production Lamborghini to compete with the lower end Ferrari's and Porsche's of the day. Several design studios were contacted for ideas but Marcello Gandini eventually won out. At the time, Gandini was still designing and revising the shape of what would eventually become the Diablo. So it only made sence to hand him the P140 styling project as well.

Innitial first impressions upon seeing the P140, is that it is deffinitely a Lamborghini. The sharp lines of the early Diablo prototypes are apparent, though Silhouette/Jalpa influence is unmistakable. This no doubt came from Lamborghini's desire for a smaller car with similar overall themes to its predecessors. The car had to communicate the ideas of speed and agressiveness, but at the same time letting people know that this is the "younger brother" of the Diablo, Lamborghini's flagship model.

The engine for this new prototype was itself a prototype, a V10 created in only seven months. Capacity for this engine was 3.9 litres with 4 valve heads producing some 400 horsepower at 7,200rpm.

This P140 Prototype was eventually rebodied by Ital Design as the Cala which debuted in 1995.
