THE REGISTRIES Lamborghini Serial Numbers Explained - by Edvar van Daalen The following should solve some of the mystery about the VIN's on Lamborghinis. And yes, there are still some questions. This page will be revised as more information is uncovered. Any comments, correction and additions will be appreciated A LOT!!!!!!! The sixth and seventh digit of the VIN somehow represent the type of the car, so I need some examples to find out which designation belongs to which type. So, if you have any VINs of which you know the type, PLEASE let me know!!!! 1st, 2nd and 3rd digit: WMI CODE (Code for the country and make) - ALWAYS "ZA9" (=small manufacturers in Italy) 4th digit: MODEL - "C" = Countach - "D" = Diablo - "J" = Jalpa - "L" = LM 002 - "R" = Diablo Roadster 5th digit: SERIES (market) - "0" = ??? (seen on 1985 and earlier Lambos) - "A" = ??? (probably "America" or so?) - "B" = ??? (seen on >1985 Jalpas in the US) - "C" = Canada - "E" = Europe - "U" = USA 6th digit: BODY TYPE - "0" = Coupe - "2" = Diablo GT, Diablo SV, Diablo VT & Diablo SE30 - "3" = Roadster - "4" = ???? (seen on LM 002) 7th digit: ENGINE - "0" = Jalpa - "1" = Diablo GT, Diablo VT, Diablo VT Roadster & Diablo SV - "2" = Diablo SE30 - "5" = Countach/LM002 - "7" = Diablo, Diablo SE30, Diablo VTR & Diablo VT Roadster 8th digit: RESTRAINT SYSTEM - "0" = ???? (seen on early Countach and early Jalpas) - "A" = Active - "B" = Airbags - "P" = Passive 9th digit: USA CHECK DIGIT - "0" (on early cars and on European versions) - "0 - 9, X" (= calculation of all other digits) 10th digit: MODEL YEAR - "A" = 1980 - "B" = 1981 - "C" = 1982 - "D" = 1983 - "E" = 1984 - "F" = 1985 - "G" = 1986 - "H" = 1987 - "J" = 1988 - "K" = 1989 - "L" = 1990 - "M" = 1991 - "N" = 1992 - "P" = 1993 - "R" = 1994 - "S" = 1995 - "T" = 1996 - "V" = 1997 - "W" = 1998 - "X" = 1999 - "Y" = 2000 - "1" = 2001 - "2" = 2002 11th digit: ASSEMBLY PLANT - ALWAYS "L" (Santa Agata) 12th, 13th and 14th digit: WMI CODE (second part, only for small manufacturers) - ALWAYS "A12" (Lamborghini) 15th, 16th and 17th digit: SEQUENCE NUMBER Remarks: * The serialnumber of a Lamborghini is often listed as "JLA12399". "J" means 1988, "LA12" appears on ALL Lambos, "399" is the sequence number. * Please note that "JLA12399" does NOT have to be a UNIQUE number. Example: "JLA12399" is a red Countach 5000 S QV on plates F 920 OYR (GB). "JLA12399" is ALSO a black Jalpa in South Carolina, USA. * So, the 8-digit serial number is only unique in combination with the type. * At the beginning of each type, they start with sequencenumber "001". When they reach "999", they will just continue with a next batch, starting with "001". SERIAL NUMBER RANGES: Any comments??? * ZA9C_05___LA12___ = Countach * Countach LP400S NO VIN! serialnumber range 1121002 - 11214xx * Countach LP500S s/n: CLA124xx - ELA127xx * Countach LP5000S QV s/n: FLA127xx - GLA12999 & GLA12001 - JLA124xx * Countach 25th Ann. s/n: KLA124xx - KLA12999 & KLA12001 - KLA12085 * ZA9J______LA12___ = Jalpa s/n: DLA12001 - JLA12419 * ZA9L_45___LA12___ = LM 002 s/n: JLA12001 - LLA12302 * ZA9D_01___LA12___ = Diablo ....
